Wine/Sake set, # 0001BB: sold
The tallest piece in this sake/wine pouring set (of three pieces) is 6" tall.
Fired in the autumn firing of the Dante" kiln....Mark Goertzen's woodfiring kiln, this piece was fired for 50 hours with Chinese Elm fuel.
Mark asked me to be "kiln boss" for this firing: it meant that I could choose the fuel, load the kiln and line up the staffing. So this was the first wood firing that I had directed in almost 5 years.
In 50 hours of firing the back of this kiln receives significant ash deposits, but not nearly enough for the natural-ash-only surfaces that I most admire. So in this firing, I tested 20 different glazes. That is to say, that the back portion of the load was all glazed......then fired in the 50-hour wood-firing: the wood-firing adding significant wood ash to the melting glazes.
We discovered an abundance of thoroughly remarkable results by glazing these works. I'm happy to share a few of them with you here in this posting...........and in my next posting which will occur in a few days.
This little wine/sake set is perfect for sake...but equally fine for red wine. Just decant into the pouring piece, and then into the glasses. The multiple pourings helps the red wine "open up" and be ready to drink a little sooner than it would be if it just sat there in your glass, being sloshed occasionally.
Here is an intimate set for two....a remarkable surface you can return to again and again -- each time seeing new things in this very complex surface....each time receiving the amazing gift of 50 hours of firing and 4 cords of wood.
One of my favorites from among the 20 glazed sets from the last firing............... hope you will treat yourself to one of these.
